Bass that takes you down.

Nothing brings realism to recorded sound like deep, authoritative bass. Yet most affordable systems are compromised in this critical region. Here the rich, powerful bottom octaves are fundamental—literally—to the life of music and movie soundtracks when it comes to reproducing the full spectrum of instruments and sound effects.
ELAC subwoofers are easy to add to your existing speaker system, thanks to built-in power amplification—with EQ models—ELAC’s advanced control app that makes room integration a breeze. Because the low frequencies reproduced by a subwoofer are omnidirectional, it means that a subwoofer can be located most any place in your listening room and that, because of the omnidirectional dispersion pattern of the lowest notes, a single subwoofer is sufficient to reproduce the content of both stereo channels. Listeners who want even more bass output can use one subwoofer per channel for the absolute ultimate in low-frequency slam, impact and realism. Add an ELAC powered subwoofer to your sound system and discover what you’ve been missing.

The challenge for powered subwoofers and their amplifiers

Audio quality and power efficiency have long been at odds when it comes to amplifier design. Traditional Class AB amplifiers, which account for about 90 percent of all amplifiers made, are capable of producing prodigious power and excellent sound, but do so at the expense of efficiency. In fact, up to 50 percent of these amplifiers’ energy is wasted, dissipated as heat. Heat becomes an added liability when such amplifiers, in the case of powered subwoofers, are enclosed in a speaker cabinet. Class D switching amplifiers, on the other hand, run cool and occupy relatively little space. Compact, lightweight and efficient, they are a sensible choice for the latest applications, especially when used for powering subwoofers. Typically, however, the sound quality achieved by typical Class D designs has not been suitable for the best audio applications, but new technology has improved these designs to compete with the best of traditional amplifier topologies.
